  • Profile Purity

Now is a great time to mention what "Profile" means. Profile is an Entertainment Industry terms for "standing out like a sore thumb" and don't get me wrong. Standing out is what your doing. Its a head banger of a problem, but when the systems of society and culture are analyzed from the perspective of a Dungeon Master (Conductor/DM/Storyteller) it becomes clear that ... and precise language fails me here :sigh:

Singers. There are lots of singers. There are different voices, and moreso there are only a limited number of different "recognisable" or "identifiable" positions in the hierarchy of the singers that are out there - in so much as someone (like myself) who doesn't keep track of singing stars can be expected to discern - that anyone can be expected to keep track of. When I say "Latino Pop Singer" my mnemonic database returns Jennifer Lopez. Then Christina Agularia.. sp? "Aguilera" (era Aguil Era) ... :hehe: The Aguilera Era ... nah too corny :smirk.

Anyhow - I have seen enough "made in Hollywood about hollywood" movies, and spent enough time amongst actors, and behind the set to say that "yeah" the end of the preceeding paragraph is effectively how some "Hollywood-style" conversations go, and it is in Hollywood that the term "Profile" gets tossed around allot. Maybe even more so in New York, and all in all when you get to the business world at-large you hear the terms - used the same way - occasionally. More often in the business realm "Profile" is used specifically on behalf of a Company or expressly within a company. You might hear of someone having a "high profile" in a specific department or company in the same way you would hear of Hannah Montana having a high profile in the Disney company.

Jennifer Lopez and Coca Cola have high profiles. It means that you are thought of when your name, or your product is mentioned ... at all. Hence the term "no publicity is bad publicity" and we see things such as orchestrated Brittany Spears "flashers" and "what you asked for" Celebrity Journalist beatings. Getting noticed is the name of the game in any industry, but a hundred times so in the Entertainment Industry.

To a certain extent, mas-e-menus, not completely but in general, it is difficult for a "Female Latino Pop Singer" to get into the industy because of Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera. Not that either of them are doing anything wrong (considering the "Cake Hypothesis" and setting it aside for this purpose) yet they nevertheless make that Profile more difficult to attain. The same "Female Latino Pop Singer" could perhaps go for "Country Latina Pop Star" (say) or "Beat Inspired Theatrical Singer" and be more succesful faster for the sake of niching themselves.

With an infinite variety of people you have an undefinite deffinition of entertainment, and therefor numerous types of profile as well as varying degrees of [rofile popularity. "Jenna of the Porn Industry" is a perfect example. There are two major players in the Porn Industry with the name Jenna. You can judge the reach of their profile, in the right venue, "Haze or Jameson?" and that is the phenomena and effect of "Profile and Reach" as such. Why is there only one Weird Al Yankovich?

Your name is either "a result" or triggers "a result" in a human brain database. The phenomena of Google and other search protocols mirror this concept, if imperfectly. Progromatic manipulation of search systems is easier than mind-controlling a population. When I seached for "Fable 2 Forum" something that was properly labled and tagges as "Forum & Fable 2 related" were the results. I chose the second link because the primary link was the manufacturer website. I am more interested in the self motivated cluster of Fable addicts vs the publicity minded venue provided by the creator.

The Fable 2 forums is simply an example of how "SEO" and other forms of search engine optimization are not 100% the same as old fashioned "Profile & Reach" regardless of their accesibility. They are however and excellent device to example the difference between profile and reach. I typed "Pop Singer" into Google and I returned a picture of Jenny McCartny and Willa Ford, a video result for John Mellencamp, and Brittany Spears (reffered to simply as Brittany) was the first real result after a handful of "wikipedic entries" such as wikipedia and gigsalad :com:

That is reach. Britany Spears' name is synonymous with "Pop Singer" if I searched "King of Pop" you already know what I will find. That is "The Reach" of a personal profile. A non-digital example is a conversation I had this morning. I asked someone at a cafe if they knew who Stan Lee was. Easily the most recognized name in comic books after Superman and Spider-Man, she did not recognize the name. I then felt motivated to inform her who Stan Lee was, what he did, and an amuzing anecdote of his life with this person because I wanted her to know who Stan Lee was.

The real world example is again reach, and an excellent example of how reach functions as a compleatly natural phenomena. I have a high opinion of Stan Lee. He also has a huge profile. It is a socially encouraged action to praise those whome you consider worthy (as decry those who you dislike), and it is also a socially encouraged action to discuss people with high profiles. In some social circles it is considered -bad- to talk to about people who have low profiles. For whatever reason the phenomena of Profile serves a simplifying function in general discourse.

There are people that like for others to speak precisely. Men such as my friend Ryan Martin of the Pirate Party US. Most likely people that enjoy my writing as well. Far and away the "common person" either by virtue of translation barriers, or a self enforced ignorance prefer to refer to complicated subjects in common terms. Common terms, in this case, means (ala averages out) to say ... use the following sentance,

"Them Brittany Spears and Christina Agulara types" ~ Sic

As opposed to internationally recognized, former Mickey Mouse Clubber, singer type ladys ... from Hollywood or New York City. That is a quote and translation from a relative of mine who would most likely rather remain nameless. Unless we're talkin' about Trucks.
